I recently rescued several fish that were left outside PestSmart. They are a silver dollar, three black skirt tetras, and another tetra. The owner had recently been given an aggressive cichlid, and it was beating up on the other fish, as you would expect. Instead of returning the cichlid, they decided to put them in a bag and tried to leave them in the fish department at PetSmart. They were caught, and PetSmart explained that they couldn’t take them, so they left them outside.
Over time the aquarium owner may run into situations where they may need to rehome fish, whether it is from incompatibility, overstocking, wanting to reduce their number of tanks, or get out on the hobby altogether. After my recent incident I decided to compile a list of ways to rehome fish without just abandoning them on the street.
1. Give or sell them to fellow hobbiests. This is a good option because you know the person and can judge whether you are giving them to a good home. It can be difficult because, in my experience, most of the people I know are either fully stocked or have a specific stocking plan. For instance, my friend with the carefully aquascaped cardinal tetra tank isn’t going to want the oscar that came with a tank I bought on Craigslist.
2. Speaking of Craigslist, this is the option I have had the most luck with. You probably won’t make a lot of money, but you will find people looking for the fish you are getting rid of. The downside is that you may have strangers coming to your house, or you may dig your fish out and meet somewhere else and they don’t show. i know it sounds rude, but you may want to screen the purchasers. I know a person that refused to sell their African cichlids to someone who was going to put them in their church guppy tank. The cichlids would have enjoyed the buffet!
3. Post in the MyAquariumClub classifieds. Again, you are more likely to find someone looking for your specific fish, and you’ll be less concerned with your fish going to a good home. However, unless you find a local buyer you will have to deal with shipping.
4. Aquabid and eBay. Both are safer (no face to face strangers!), but you do will most likely have to deal with shipping and the challenges that presents.

5. Another option is to check with a local fish store and see if they will take them. You may even get store credit. There is one store in our area that will do this.
6. Check with any local fish clubs. You can usually find out about them at the fish store or online.
7. Look for a local group on Facebook. We have two in our area. This worked for me once.
8. My last option is the one that usually happens. You have room for another tank, don’t you?
So those are my ideas. Let me know if you have other options that have worked for you.
So... what do you think? Please leave me a comment.
